Posted in Uncategorized on October 20, 2008 by surfingthewarmindustryNo show this week(10/17), and somebody (me) forgot to tell you. Sorry everyone. You know how fall break is. When you’ve previously had no plans to do anything and you get a call to go on a road trip, you don’t pass that shit up. New STWI this week, promise.
Shit I’m Diggin’ #2
Posted in Uncategorized on October 17, 2008 by surfingthewarmindustryBeatconductor – “I Wouldn’t Wanna Be Like You”

How Sweden’s Ture Sjöberg has operated for this long under this alias and somehow not been sued by Madlib baffles me, as I’m sure it baffles you. However, where Beat Konducta creates hip-hop mini-masterpieces that are hazy and soulful, Beatconductor opts for making full-fledged club tracks of many styles. Take this track for example, from the recently-released “Brand New Secondhand” LP. A seven minute-long 80s groovefest in the vein of The Whispers’ “Rock Steady”, “I Wouldn’t Wanna Be Like You” is the kind of song that my early grade-school self always imagined that would be soundtracking my Saturday nights as I’d be going out to party with a gorgeous lady friend. Wall-to-wall fun.

Kent – “Vy Från Ett Luftslott (Punks Jump Up Remix)”
More retro-ness AND Swedish-ness. Recently, Scandinavia’s biggest band laid down a challenge to their fans to create a video for their latest single. This was the winner. By far the best music video reconstituted from old film that I’ve ever seen.
Awesome Tapes From Africa
Sometimes I like my music to not come from Europe or the States. If you’re in the mood for a change, check Awesome Tapes From Africa. Senegalese hip-hop, Nigerian Juju, Congolese kwassa kwassa…it’s all here. There’s not a lot I can say, just hear for yourself.

Shit I’m Digging
Posted in Uncategorized on October 1, 2008 by surfingthewarmindustry
Although I was digging this more a few weeks ago when I first was introduced to it and hadn’t seen them all several times yet, it’s still something to check out. Techies have way too much time on their hands, you know? Some perverted freak hacks SNES’ Super Mario World, making each level far harder than it has any right to be, and then makes his best friend play it through. Trust me, dude needs those infinite lives. Link above.
October BEARDTOBER!
Earlier this year I was having a conversation with myself, and I said “Self, you should grow a beard this fall.” That was that. And then when a friend told me other people were plotting to do so during the month of October and set up a Facebook events page dedicated to it, I had to get the fuck in. And so should you.
I hate shaving, so I started Sunday. This is me then.

Stay tuned.

I like numbers. And colors. And maps. I’m especially interested in the up coming Preisdential election (as you should be). So when I was introduced to this unofficial electoral vote calculation site, I damn near had an orgasm. Mind you, there are a few sites like this, and their projections are almost never in line with each other, but the thing is–wait, NC is tied after pulling hard for McCain all this time??!! TAKE THAT!
Ahem. Again, link above.
Lastly…
For each show from last week on, playlists will now have their seperate pages, which you can find links to on the right. The program for last week’s Belgian Waffles is now on view.
So I’ve been neglectful of this thing.
Posted in Uncategorized on September 26, 2008 by surfingthewarmindustryI know. Boo-hiss. But have you had time for anything else lately? Didn’t think so.
Nonetheless, in the coming days I plan on implementing some new regular features, as well as uploading music to compliment the theme for each show, including tracks that didn’t get an airing. Until then, please enjoy Surfing The Warm Industry each week, and feedback/ideas are always welcome.

Soulwax and Hooverphonic are excellent bands with excellent debut albums that were released in 1996. They also happen to be from Belgium. Next week’s show will concentrate on more bands from this Northern European nation. If you know anything about me by now, you know I’ve got interesting things up my sleeve. Tune in and find out what they are this Friday.
It’s 1996 all over again!
Posted in Uncategorized on September 18, 2008 by surfingthewarmindustryOr it will be tomorrow night on STWI, anyway. Join me, won’t you, as I recall some of the best music to come out of an in-between year.
That’s all I got.

This week on STWI, I will be featuring various artists and tracks from everyone’s favorite underground hip-hop label, Stones Throw Records. You’ll hear some of your favorites from Madlib (and his many aliases and side projects), J Dilla (R.I.P.), and others, but I’ll especially be giving airtime to tracks and artists on the label who have been underrated or overlooked and deserve a play or two. Requests are encouraged. It all goes down Friday the 12th at 7 PM. Get in.
